Brain injury department

Intensive care department for patients after severe brain damages

The traumatic brain injury department in Reuth is one of the leading departments of its kind in Israel for rehabilitating people with severe brain injuries. The department operates at the highest professional level, using advanced device technologies and, if necessary, medicinal treatment in order to improve the state of consciousness of its patients.

The department is constantly conducting research in areas related to patients in a vegetative state:

  • usage of equipment that reduces the number of infections in patients
  • assessment of the psychological condition of family members
  • evaluation of pain level

The department is designated for patients with decreased level of consciousness caused by brain damage of various origins such as after traumatic brain injuries, anoxic (resulting from lack of oxygen) brain injuries and others.

Patients come for rehabilitation from general hospitals immediately after their condition is stabilized. Most of the patients are discharged after completion of the rehabilitation process with an improved functional status; some remain in the hospital for longer periods.

The intensive rehabilitation process aims to maximize the restoration of the patient’s functionality lost due to the brain injury. The process also includes round-the-clock professional medical and nursing care.

An interdisciplinary team of experts develops an individual rehabilitation program for each patient. The program includes a set of procedures that contribute to improvement of cognitive and motor abilities, and tries to lessen existing respiratory problems and bedsores. In addition, the following therapies aim to significantly improve the patient’s quality of life:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Pet therapy
  • Others types of therapy as needed

Families of patients receive specialists’ advice and support from the medical and service staff.

In addition, a consultation polyclinic operates at Reuth for patients who are discharged from the department with remaining dysfunctions. There, the patient and caregiver can get advice and physician referrals to continue rehabilitation in an out-patient or in daily hospitalization setting.
